Tryian Network names artist of the year

(Plain Press, June 2007) Katherine Chilcote, mural artist and director of the Building Bridges Mural Project, was named Artist of the Year by the Tryian Network at an April 28th ceremony at the Carnegie Branch of the Cleveland Public Library.

Last summer, Chilcote worked with area churches, the West Side Ecumenical Ministry, Cleveland Colectivo, and teen summer interns Jerome Harris, Kareem Stittman, Adam Prince, Chris Drake, Denzel Hammett, Angelo Jessup and Antonio Harris to produce the large mural on the side of the Shoreway Bridge at W. 25th and Detroit Avenue.

At the reception, Chilcote explained how she works with communities to get stories into many drawings, and then hires teenagers to become artists creating murals.

Chilcote has completed two murals in Ohio City and is currently working on a project at University Circle’s Interfaith Center at Case Western Reserve University next to the Church of the Covenant.
