Why all the boarded up houses?

(Plain Press, February 2007) To the editor: It was a beautiful fall day and I decided to visit the neighborhood where I lived the first 10 years of my life. I knew the neighborhood had deteriorated over the years, but I wasn't prepared for the poverty I saw, and the many boarded up houses, including my old home at the corner of W. 34th and Denison Ave.

My family left Cleveland in 1960 and moved to beautiful San Diego. In the 40 years I lived in San Diego I never saw one boarded up home! What causes a home to be boarded up?
