Back to school backpacks distributed at Merrick House

(Plain Press, September 2006) A back to school celebration took place at Merrick House in Tremont on Thursday, August 17 thanks to the generosity of the Charter One Tools for School campaign. 150 children and their families had an afternoon of games, pizza and prizes, topped off by an ice cream truck delivering popsicles and fully-stocked backpacks.

Marie Timpano, executive director of Merrick House, said “this campaign will go a long way toward getting the school year off to a great start, certainly for our children, but also for the schools they attend and the neighborhoods where they live. Charter One is fulfilling a need that most people take for granted. The celebration, the new backpacks and the new supplies will surely make the return to the classroom a more exciting time this year.”

In addition to the 150 backpacks delivered to Merrick House, Charter One will distribute an additional 1,050 backpacks to other Cleveland children in grades K – 6 through the Greater Cleveland Neighborhood Centers Association.
