Lincoln West math teams place first in district-wide competition

(Plain Press, June 2006) Lincoln West High School teams won two first place awards at the 20th annual Mathematics Competitions for Cleveland Municipal School students held Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at John Carroll University, host and co-sponsor of the competitions since their beginning in 1987.

“Lincoln-West teams' performances have long been solid and were particularly outstanding this year,” said Kim Balk, Competitions Co-coordinator at John Carroll University.

The Lincoln West High School Math I team, under the guidance of Lena Pogrebinsky, took first place honors, outscoring 9 other high school Math I teams. The team members are: Jian Wu, Jonathan Orrotia, Mei Lin Zheng, and John Ogwuegbu.

The Lincoln West High School Advanced Math team, under the guidance of Andrew Ulle, took first place honors also, outscoring 11 other high school Advanced Math teams. The team members are: Ruchu Tan, Mei Li Chen, Lingdi Zeng, and Yu Yan Wu.

Students on the winning teams will receive personalized certificates with ribbons indicating their first place ranking and photographs of themselves with their coaches. Lincoln-West High School will receive an award plaque that includes the winning teams’ photos, said Balk.
