Council rivals continue to battle in Ward 14

(Plain Press, June 2006) A precinct committee race in Ward 14 Precinct G, may prove a precursor of a rematch between Ward 14 Council rivals Councilman Joe Santiago and former Councilman Nelson Cintron, Jr.

Councilman Joe Santiago made the mistake of sending out on city hall stationary his endorsement of Theresa Hart in the precinct committee person race. In making the endorsement he circled the name of Hart and the circle obliterated the name of her opponent Antonia Swerdlow.

Cintron, Jr. passed out literature challenging the legality of Santiago’s endorsement – on city stationary without a disclaimer indicating who paid for the mailing and postage. He also noted his support for a precinct committee person slate that included Swerdlow.

Members of the Lincoln Heights/Scranton-Starkweather Block Club, of which Swerdlow is a member, also challenged Santiago’s endorsement. They sent a letters to City Council President Martin Sweeney and to the Ohio Ethics Board questioning whether public funds or resources were used in an election endorsement. The group has been upset with newly elected Councilperson Santiago over his support of the Starkweather nightclub, a neighborhood trouble spot, at a recent zoning board hearing.
