Art House Receives Ohio Art Education Association Service Award

(Plain Press, December 2005) Art House, a nonprofit art center located in Brooklyn Centre on Cleveland’s near west side, recently received the Ohio Art Education Association’s (OAEA) 2005 Distinguished Organization for Art Education Service Award for the Northeast Ohio Region.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the Northeast Region of the OAEA for the arts-in-education programs we provide to area schools and in particular to Denison School K-8," says Sheryl Hoffman, executive director of Art House. "Art House is committed to enriching young people’s lives by providing opportunities for them to experience the making of art."

Art House, which opened in November 2001, offers a variety of arts and cultural classes, professional development programs for artists and arts educators, and arts-in-education programs to both the immediate community and the Greater Cleveland area. Art House and Denison School K-8 have developed a unique partnership with 100 students per week taking studio classes with visiting artists.

Students and their teachers walk to the studio two days per week to work with professional artists in ceramics, printmaking, enameling, mixed media sculpture and poetry writing. The artist residencies run from four to seven weeks and give the students a rare opportunity to learn new skills and develop mentorship relationships with the artists and Art House staff.
