Veteran breaks own record for poppy sales

(Plain Press, July 2004) Willie Czajka, age 85, broke his own record for the 4 th consecutive year selling poppies at the West Side Market. Czajka, the Sergeant of Arms for Roosevelt Post #58 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans at 2442 Professor Avenue in Tremont, is a retired steelworker from LTV.

This May, Czajka sold $6,026 worth of poppies at the West Side Market. Proceeds from the sale of the poppies go to a fund for hospitalized veterans at Brecksville and Wade Park Veterans’ Hospitals. Every month of May is observed as Poppy Month for Veterans all over the United States . It dates back to World War II and the D-Day invasion of Normandy , France where American veterans reported seeing poppy fields as far as the eye could see. Czajka’s previous record, set in 2003, was $5,122.

“We are proud to have Willie as one of our own,” says Commander Terry Zacharyj of the 275-member Polish Legion of American Veterans’ Roosevelt Post #58.
