Saturday, December 30, 2006, African refugee birthday party, West Side United Church of Christ, W. 38th and Bridge Avenue: Gbassay Tamba and Ibrahim Sannoh, age 4, who arrived in Cleveland from Liberia one and a half years ago, participate in a community birthday celebration. The U.S. Immigration Services marked January 1st as the birthday for many refugees because most fled their native countries without documents to prove their dates of birth.

Saturday, January 20, 2007, St. Colman 125th Anniversary House, 7015 Guthrie Avenue: Volunteers John Kazmierski, Ed Kazmierski, Dan Murray and Sharon Leasure of St. Colman’s Parish,  and Paul George and Jack Nickels of St. Christopher’s Parish, prepare to go home after a day of putting up drywall with alumni from St. Ignatius High School. The Anniversary House rehab is organized by volunteers from St. Colman Parish and its Church in the City Partner Parishes Our Lady of Help of Christians in Litchfield and St. Christopher in Rocky River. Once completed the house will serve as an affordable home for rent for a large family.

Saturday, January 20, 2007, Lakefront Hardware, 7427 Detroit Avenue: Ray Zelch, who owned and operated Lakefront Hardware since 1957, sold the business to John Skerritt in December of last year. Zelch stayed on for a month to help the new owner get adjusted. His last day was Monday January 15, 2007. The building has continuously housed a hardware store since the early 1900s, a tradition Skerritt hopes to continue.

Saturday, January 20, 2007, Halloran Park Skating Rink, 3550 Linnett: The recently refurbished Halloran Park in Ward 19 offers skating to the public for $1 for rental and skate time or 50¢ if you have your own skates. The Cleveland Department of Recreation rink, located off W.117th Street south of Lorain Avenue, is open weekday evenings and Saturdays when the temperature drops low enough.
