Welcome to Industrial Valley
Industrial Valley was annexed to Cleveland in 1850. It was known as a hub in industrial development. Development of shipping on the Great Lakes had established Cleveland as a commercial port and the development of railroad lines changed the focus of the region's economy to heavy industry. Coal, iron and steel was the primary focus of the area, however other industries also thrived. In 1870 John D. Rockefeller established the Standard Oil Company and through his control of shipping, refining and distributing, made Cleveland the center of the American refining industry for a time. In 1866, Grasseli Co (which became part of DuPont) established a large plant which supplied a wide range of industrial chemicals.
