| Welcome to Central ![]() Settled by German farmers in the 1840s this portion of East Cleveland eventually became known as Cleveland's Central neighborhood. Significant residential development took place in the 1880s when Hungarian, Italian and Russian immigrants arrived to work in nearby foundries and steel mills. After 1900 there was a significant population increase due to the migration of African-Americans from the rural South. After this migration, for a time Central was the most populated of all the Cleveland neighborhoods. Central has recently experience a significant increase in residential accommodations as hundreds of housing units have been built and hundreds more are currently in development.
