Lee-Harvard Seville-Miles Neighborhood Tour

The area, which now forms Cleveland's extreme southeast corner, existed as the Village of Miles Heights between 1927 and 1932. The Village secured a place in history in 1929 by electing Ohio's first African-American mayor, Arthur R. Johnson. The original area of the village sits between East 147th Street and East 153rd Street on Ohio Street off of Lee Road.

Location: Lee road is the north-south axis through the neighborhood that is bounded by Shaker Heights to the North, Maple Heights and Garfield Heights to the South, Warrensville Heights to the East and E 138th street to the west bordering the Union-Miles neighborhood. Neighborhood Map.

It was not until the 1940s and 1950s that the Lee-Harvard Miles area began to experience intense development. Racial change occurred during the 1960s as the neighborhood's non-white population increased from 30% in 1960 to 93% in 1970.

Just south of Miles Avenue, the Erie Rail Road line parallels Miles Avenue and dissects the community into the neighborhoods of Lee-Harvard and Seville-Miles.

Because of the relatively late development, Lee-Harvard Miles is characterized by housing and shopping areas which are among the most contemporary in the City of Cleveland.

The majority of housing in the neighborhood is single family bungalow and ranch. There is also a significant number of brick ranch houses built around cul-de-sacs east of Lee Road near Miles.

The average sales price in 1999 was over $65,000. For the previous three years, close to 25% of the housing sold in the neighborhood between $75,000 and $99,000 with 30% in the $60,000 to $74,999 price range. Property sales information.

Located at 4345 Lee Road, the Beehive Elementary School Classroom Apartments were named for a local farmer who harvested honeybees. The original schoolhouse was built in 1917 as a one-story structure. Later, in 1925, the building was expanded and in the 1980s, the schoolhouse became apartments

There have been a number of new developments in the area. The Miles Heights Village area has had 49 new homes developed throughout the area between Seville and Ohio Street. These homes, initially priced at $115,000, vary based on additional amenities. The Amistad Development Corporation has been active in both developing and promoting housing development in the community.

The newest development is Sunny Glen with 29market-rate homes located just of Lee Road near the southern border of the neighborhood. The base price for these homes is $169,000.

Kerruish Park and Legacy Garden
These homes face Kerruish Park with its large expanse of fields and the Bi-Centennial garden.

The community has two large parks that have ball fields and playgrounds. In addition, Kerruish Park has a pool.

Frederick Douglass Park
The other park, Frederick Douglass Park, on Miles Avenue at East 151st Street was once Miles Playfield. This city-owned park is situated next to Charles Elliot Middle School and was renamed in honor of abolitionist Frederick Douglass.

While driving from the border of Shaker Heights to Judson Avenue, you will come upon the Lee-Miles business district. This commercial area offers a diverse selection of long-standing African-American owned and operated business establishments.

The Lee-Harvard Shopping Center is the largest outdoor shopping area in the City. Originally developed in 1949, the shopping center has undergone a complete renovation.

Miles Avenue is still an important location for many small manufacturers and businesses. Miles Ahead, Inc. a community development corporation was established in 1972 and provides assistance to the area's businesses.

Cleveland Industrial Park
Cleveland Industrial Park is this community's largest development site. At 114 acres, this Park is located near I-480 with interchanges at Lee Road and Broadway Avenue was created by City government in 1981. Since 1998, the city has marketed opportunities for new business and successfully secured several industries who made commitments to create 600 new jobs in the $40 million industrial development.
