Cleveland Inhabitants in 1810.

OBJECTIVE:

To familiarize the students with the population of Cleveland in its early years of settlement and some of the factors which contributed to its failure to grow larger.

LESSON FOCUS:

1. Why did the population of Cleveland fail to thrive during its first few decades of settlement?

TEACHING PROCEDURE:

Have the students examine the document and then complete the questions for discussion below. Students will have to speculate about some of the answers.

1. Why given the condition of the land, which was generally good, did so few people live in Cleveland in 1810?
2. What factors could have contributed to this small population?
3. The construction of the Ohio Canal, which ended in Cleveland, helped to open the area to settlement. Why do you think this happened?
