Lesson 42

Handout 3 - Statistical Inferences of the Population of the City of Cleveland 1810 - 1990

  1. Compare the population of the City of Cleveland between 1840 and 1850. Did it increase or decrease? What could have caused this change? (HINT: What was the Panic of 1837 -- check your U.S. History text.)
  2. Compare the population between the years of 1860 and 1870. Did the population of the City of Cleveland increase or decrease? What could cause this change? (HINT: What was happening in the United States during this decade?)
  3. Compare the population statistics for the City of Cleveland between the decades of 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900. There is a large increase in the population during this time period. What could explain the changes in population during this time period? (HINT: The population of the United States was also increasing during this time period - Why?)
  4. Compare the population statistics of African-Americans for the decades of 1910, 1920 and 1930. What could explain the large increase in population of African-Americans during this time period? (HINT: Part of the answer can be found when looking at WWI and its affect on industry and manufacturing and labor in Cleveland.)
  5. Compare the population statistics for the City of Cleveland between 1930 and 1940. Explain the decrease in population. (HINT: What were the economic conditions of the United States during this time period?)
  6. Explain the population increase from 1940 to 1950 for the City of Cleveland. (HINT: What world event takes place during this decade?)
  7. From 1940 to 1960 the African American population in the City of Cleveland increases over 166,000. What could cause this change? (HINT: What opportunities did the North offer? How was the society of the North different than the society of the South for the African-American?)
  8. Explain possible causes for the decline in population in the City of Cleveland from the decades of 1970, 1980, and 1990. (HINT: Consider the social tensions of the 1960s, and economic changes in heavy manufacturing during the 1970s and 1980s)
  9. After completing the Statistical Analysis and Statistical Inference worksheets on the population of the City of Cleveland, what finding surprised you the most? Why?
  10. What conclusions can you make about the population statistics of a city and history?
