To introduce the story of the establishment of Cleveland through the use of a short reading.

LESSON FOCUS:

  1. How was the city of Cleveland established?
  2. What were the advantages and disadvantages of the selection of an area along the Cuyahoga River as the site of the main city of the Western Reserve?

TEACHING PROCEDURE:

  1. Have the students read the selection and answer the questions for discussion below:
    a. How were New England townships laid out?
    b. Why is it necessary to have order in laying out the plans for a city?
    c. Do you think the plan for Cleveland was a good one?
    d. Would you change it? How?
  2. Have the students list the advantages and disadvantages of settling along the banks of the Cuyahoga River.
