Represents a model of community services. This center, and its staff,
is dedicated to share the Love of God through practical service and
activities to our neighbors.

Mission Statement
The Salvation Army is an international movement and an evangelical
part of the universal Christian church.Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is to
preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name with discrimination.


The programs and activities described on this website are specifically designed to meet the
spiritual, educational, cultural, social and recreational needs of the children and adults in our

WORSHIP
The Salvation Army Worship and Service Center in Hough offers opportunities for worship
and praise to God. All are invited to attend. Casual dress acceptable. The present schedule is:

DAY CARE/CHILD CARE CENTER/HEAD START
A fully licensed day care child development center (and Head Start program) at 6010 Hough
Avenue presently serves more than 130 children. The center operates year round for children
six months to five years. Fees are based on a sliding scale. A variety of government and private
programs are available to offer parents a lower rate for those who qualify.

This Center offers quality care in a loving environment. There are indoor and outdoor play areas,
access to the swimming pool and roller skating rink and many field trips and special events.

THE LEARNING CENTER
This after school academic program provides tutorial support for school age children from
kindergarten (K) through grade nine (9). The program operates from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
from Monday through Friday during the school year. Applications are required and available.
The registration fee is $5.00. there are no additional costs for the program. It is currently
receiving grants through private donors, foundations, and the United Way.

The primary focus of The Learning Center is to provide students with a competent and caring adult
support system, lacing emphasis on completing homework assignments promptly. The program
assists students in successfully meeting the academic performance standards set for his or her
current grade level by the Cleveland Public School system or other educational facilities.

THE COMPUTER LAB
The computer lab places today’s technology in the hands of students of all ages. There are
computer workstations complete with CD-ROM, sound cards, scanners, and ink-jet printers
offering an outstanding state of the art, training and educational environment. Reservations,
please, based upon current program and staff availability.

FINE ARTS AND CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Every Friday, during the school year, the schedule includes Christian Education and fine arts
groups. The following electives are offered: Beginners brass band, drum instruction, precision
drills and timbrels and flags, mime/dance, puppets, arts and crafts. Parents are urged to register
their children through the Learning Center program to participate.

Throughout the week there are additional options for individual lessons, on a limited basis, through
cooperative programs between The Salvation Army and the Cleveland Music School Settlement.
Children must register through the Learning Center program. Acceptance is also based upon
aptitude, ability, interest, good behavior, and parental support. A $5.00 fee is required to cove the
loan of an instrument and music.

THE CULTURAL CENTER
The Cultural Center and display are located in the administrative area of the Hough Center. It offers
the unique opportunity for students to study ancient and current cultures, cultural practices, and
general history relating to "people of color," Hispanic, and other cultures of the Cleveland community.
Special programs are scheduled and designed to cultivate a sense of dignity, improve self-esteem,
and productive citizen’s obligation.

THE DAILY MEAL PROGRAM "SOUP KITCHEN"
A free, hot, wholesome meal is served Monday through Friday at 12:00 p.m. (Noon). This daily meal
is open to senior citizens and people in need.

SOCIAL SERVICES
A variety of social services are provided at the Hough Center by a licensed social worker and students
from local colleges and universities. The following services are available to families, single persons,
and senior citizens:

Clothing Information and Referral

Christmas and other seasonal assistance
Residential summer Camp for Children aAt Camp NEOSA in Carrolton, Ohio
(Application, medical and a registration fee are required for overnight camp. Forms are available
in May of each year.)

FRIENDLY VISITING PROGRAM
During the year and specifically during the Christmas season, the Salvation Army offers a friendly
visiting program to the sick and shut-in and those in nursing home facilities. Visitation is arranged
by referral, prearranged by staff personnel, and by request. If you are interested in any way,

PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN
The Summer Program for School Age Children, of working parents, begins in early June and
continues through mid-August. This day camp type of enrichment program offers opportunities
in swimming, basketball, volleyball, roller skating, field trips, arts and crafts, and many other special
activities. Registration is required. Breakfast and lunch are part of the program. Field trips are
included in the weekly fee.

GYMNASIUM
The gymnasium is available to the youth, young adults and adults at scheduled times. The schedule
is posted throughout the building. The gymnasium is fully equipped with scoreboard and spectator
seating. Rentals are available at reasonable rates based upon program use and schedule.

SWIMMING POOL
The temperature controlled indoor pool offers year round enjoyment and exercise for all ages. A
variety of programs and lessons are offered by the certified lifeguard and water safety instructor.
Additional information is available at the main office or front desk. The schedule is posted throughout
the building. Rentals are available at reasonable rates based upon program use and schedule.

ROLLER SKATING RINK
Indoor roller skating is available for all ages. A weekly and monthly schedule is posted. Children
less than six must have parental supervision. Most sizes of roller skates are available for rent.
The roller rink is available for rent and private parties at reasonable rates based on program use
and schedule.

BOXING ACADEMY, BOXING RINK AND WEIGHT ROOM
The Boxing Academy, boxing rink, and weight room are located on the lower level of the facility.
This program is coordinated by Mr. Clinton Martin, and inductee of the Cleveland sports Hall of Fame.
A separate fee is set for this program based upon age of the participant. Parental permission is required.
